About Running Pace Calculator
The Running Pace Calculator is a free online tool to convert and calculate running distance, finish time, and pace per kilometer or mile. By providing any two values, the third parameter is calculated instantly with high mathematical precision.
In addition to pace (min/km and min/mile), the calculator displays equivalent speeds in km/h and mph for treadmill workouts. It also generates printable split time tables (1 km, 5 km, 1 mile) and projects half marathon and marathon finish times using the Peter S. Riegel endurance model to assist both novice runners and marathoners in race pacing.
How to Calculate Your Pace
Select Mode and Distance
Choose whether to calculate pace, time, or distance. Use distance preset buttons (5K, 10K, Half, Marathon) or enter any custom distance in kilometers or miles.
Enter Parameters for Instant Results
Input your time (hours, minutes, seconds) or target pace. As you type, the tool immediately computes and updates average pace and speed in both metric and imperial units.
View Splits, Print, and Check Predictions
Inspect your segment split table by 1 km, 5 km, or 1 mile intervals, and print a clean copy for race day. Enter past race times to calculate theoretical marathon finish times via Riegel's formula.
Running & Pace Terminology
- Pace (min/km & min/mile)
- The time required to cover one kilometer or one mile, expressed in minutes and seconds. Unlike vehicle speeds (km/h or mph), a lower pace number represents faster running speed.
- Split Time & Cumulative Time
- A split time is the duration taken to complete a specific intermediate section (e.g., from km 5 to km 10). Cumulative time (elapsed time) is the total running time from the start line to that point.
- Riegel's Race Time Formula
- An endurance formula proposed by Peter S. Riegel in 1981: T2 = T1 × (D2 / D1)^1.06. It estimates race times over longer distances from performances in shorter events.
- Sub-X Target Pace (Floored)
- Finishing a full marathon under a barrier time, such as Sub-3 (under 3:00:00) or Sub-4 (under 4:00:00). To guarantee breaking the goal, target paces are floored to integer seconds (e.g., 5:41/km for Sub-4).
- Treadmill Speed Conversion
- Converting speed displayed on treadmill consoles (km/h or mph) into running pace (min/km or min/mile). Calculated as Pace (sec/km) = 3600 / Speed (km/h).
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q. What pace do I need to run a sub-4 marathon?
- To complete a full marathon (26.2188 miles / 42.195 km) in under 4 hours, you need to maintain an average pace of under 9:09 /mile (5:41 /km). Running at exactly 9:09 /mile yields a finish time of 3:59:48, successfully achieving a sub-4 marathon.
- Q. What pace does a treadmill speed of 6.0 mph or 10.0 km/h correspond to?
- A treadmill setting of 6.0 mph corresponds exactly to a 10:00 /mile pace (6:13 /km, 9.66 km/h). Conversely, a speed of 10.0 km/h corresponds to 6:00 /km (9:39 /mile). This tool provides seamless two-way conversion between speed and pace in both units.
- Q. What are the exact official distances for a half and full marathon?
- According to World Athletics discipline information, an official marathon is 26.2188 miles (42.195 km) (standardised in 1921 as 26 miles 385 yards), and a half marathon is exactly half of that at 13.1094 miles (21.0975 km). Our presets and algorithms strictly follow these certified distances.
- Q. How can I use the split table print feature?
- Clicking the 'Print Split Table' button launches your browser's print dialog. The page features dedicated print styles (@media print) that automatically hide navigation and control panels, formatting only the clean split table for standard A4 or Letter printing.
- Q. How reliable is the Riegel formula race prediction?
- The Riegel formula (T2 = T1 × (D2 / D1)^1.06) is a mathematical model that estimates race times based on past performances over different distances. Because factors such as weather, elevation gain, pacing, and individual aerobic endurance affect real races, predictions should serve as a helpful guideline rather than a guarantee.
- Q. Do I need to re-enter values when switching between miles and kilometers?
- No re-entry is needed. Switching between km and miles preserves your exact internal values (stored in kilometers and seconds) and instantly recalculates the displayed formats between miles, km, min/mile, and min/km without rounding drift.
