About
Cooking Unit Converter converts volume-based recipe measurements like "cups" and "tablespoons" into weight units like grams, using ingredient-specific density. It includes 50+ built-in ingredient density values for flour, sugar, butter, milk, and more.
"1 cup of flour" and "1 cup of sugar" have very different weights (flour ≈ 106g, sugar ≈ 170g for a 200ml cup). Generic converters can't handle this — our tool uses actual density data to give accurate results.
Supports Japanese (200ml), US (≈237ml), Metric (250ml), and UK Imperial (≈284ml) cup standards for easy international recipe reproduction. All processing is local — no data is ever sent to a server.

Glossary
- Density (Specific Gravity)
- Mass per unit volume of a substance. Water = 1.0 g/ml. Denser ingredients (e.g., honey ≈ 1.42) weigh more for the same volume.
- Japanese Cup
- The measuring cup used in Japanese recipes. 1 cup = 200ml.
- US Cup
- The measuring cup used in American recipes. 1 cup ≈ 236.6ml (8 fl oz).
- Tablespoon (tbsp)
- 15ml in Japan and international standards. Same as "tbsp" in English recipes.
- Teaspoon (tsp)
- 5ml in Japan and international standards. Same as "tsp" in English recipes.
- fl oz (Fluid Ounce)
- A volume unit mainly used in the US. 1 fl oz ≈ 29.57ml.
- oz (Ounce)
- A weight unit. 1 oz ≈ 28.35g. Different from fl oz.
- lb (Pound)
- A weight unit. 1 lb = 16 oz ≈ 453.6g.
- Volume vs Weight
- The same "cup" of different ingredients weighs differently because each has a unique density (g/ml).
- Gluten
- Protein in wheat flour. Density differences between all-purpose and bread flour are partly due to gluten content.
FAQ
- Q.What's the difference between different cup standards (JP, US, Metric, UK)?
- A Japanese cup is 200ml, a US cup is 236.6ml, a Metric cup (Aus/NZ/UK) is 250ml, and a UK Imperial cup is 284ml. There can be up to a 40% difference depending on the cup. Pay attention when reproducing foreign recipes.
- Q.How many grams is 1 tablespoon of honey?
- About 21g (density 1.42 × 15ml). Honey is considerably heavier than water.
- Q.How many grams is 1 cup of all-purpose flour?
- About 106g with a Japanese cup (200ml) and about 125g with a US cup (237ml).
- Q.Is my data sent to a server?
- No. All processing is done locally in your browser. Nothing is sent externally.
- Q.What if my ingredient is not in the list?
- Use a similar ingredient as a reference. Flours are roughly 0.4–0.6 g/ml, liquids roughly 0.9–1.2 g/ml.
- Q.Does it work offline?
- Yes. All ingredient data is statically defined in the browser. Once the page is loaded, it works offline.
- Q.Are tablespoon standards the same worldwide?
- Tablespoon (15ml) and teaspoon (5ml) are the same in Japan and international standards. However, Australia uses 20ml tablespoons in some cases.
- Q.Is the butter density for melted butter?
- Yes, the butter (melted) option uses the liquid density (0.91 g/ml). For solid butter, it is easier to measure by stick (1 stick = 113g).
