- VAT (Value Added Tax)
- A type of indirect consumption tax placed on a product or service whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain. Used widely across Europe and other regions.
- Standard vs. Reduced Rates
- Most countries have a baseline "Standard" rate, but apply lower "Reduced" rates to essential items like food, water, or books to lessen the burden on consumers.
- Gross to Net (Reverse VAT)
- The process of taking a final price that already includes tax, and reverse-calculating to find the original pre-tax price and the exact tax amount included.
- Net Amount
- The base price of a product or service before any taxes or deductions are applied.
- Gross Amount
- The final total price of a product or service, including all applicable taxes like VAT or sales tax.
FAQ
- Q.How are decimal fractions rounded?
- For maximum accuracy and universal applicability, we use standard "Half-up" rounding for most currencies, matching the exact decimal requirements of each currency (e.g., 2 decimals for EUR/GBP, 0 for JPY). Note that for Japan (JP) specifically, standard accounting practice uses "Floor" (rounding down) which our calculator applies automatically when Japan is selected.
- Q.Can I calculate VAT for multiple countries?
- Yes. You can switch between various countries using the dropdown menu. The calculator will automatically adjust the preset standard and reduced tax rates as well as the correct currency formatting for the selected region.
- Q.Is my financial data saved or sent anywhere?
- No, absolutely not. All calculations are performed entirely in your browser using local JavaScript. Your input data is never sent to any external server, ensuring complete privacy.
- Q.Does it support reduced VAT rates?
- Yes. By selecting the "Reduced" option, you can calculate taxes for goods and services that qualify for lower VAT rates, such as food or books in many countries.
- Q.Can I use a custom tax rate?
- Yes. Choose "Custom" and enter any percentage you need. This is useful for historical tax rates, specific regional or state sales taxes, or any rate not listed in the standard presets.
