About the Grade & GPA Calculator
This tool is a free online calculator that helps you easily compute your Grade Point Average (GPA) or find out the final exam score you need to reach your target grade. It automates the tedious math and provides real-time results instantly.
In addition to simple averages, it supports "Weighted GPA" which factors in the importance (credits) of each course. Furthermore, it has built-in support for various international grading scales including the standard US 4.0 scale, Germany's 1-6 scale, and France's 20-point scale. You can switch between them with a simple dropdown menu, or use the customization feature to define your school's unique grading criteria.
All grade data you enter is processed entirely within your device's browser. Your personal information and sensitive grade data are never sent to or stored on external servers. No account registration is required, making it secure and easy to use.
How to Use
Select Calculation Mode
Choose "Weighted GPA", "Target Grade", or "Simple Average" depending on your needs. For standard university GPA calculations, select "Weighted GPA".
Set the Grading Scale
Select the grading scale that matches your school's system from the dropdown menu (e.g., US 4.0). You can click "Settings" to customize the mapping between letter grades and numerical values.

Grading Glossary
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- A numerical expression of a student's academic performance. In the US, it typically scales up to 4.0. It is a widely used metric for university admissions, job applications, and scholarships globally.
- Weighted Average
- An average where each data point is assigned a "weight". In grade calculation, the "credits" of each course serve as the weight. Courses with more credits have a greater impact on the final GPA.
- Grading Scale
- The system used to convert a test score (e.g., out of 100) into a grade (e.g., A, B, C or 4.0, 3.0, 2.0). These scales vary significantly by country and university. For example, Germany uses a scale where 1.0 is the highest mark.
- Credits / Credit Hours
- A value representing the required study time or importance of a course. A course that meets more frequently usually grants more credits. When calculating GPA, the grade point is multiplied by the credits, making it a crucial factor.
- Target Grade Calculation
- A reverse-calculation method used to find out what score you need on your remaining exams to achieve a desired final grade, based on your current grades and their weight in the syllabus.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q.Is the grade data I enter sent to a server?
- No, it is not. All calculations are performed entirely within your browser on your device. No personal information or grade data is ever sent to or stored on external servers. You can use this tool with peace of mind.
- Q.What is the difference between 'Weighted GPA' and 'Simple Average'?
- 'Simple Average' adds all your course grades together and divides by the number of courses. 'Weighted GPA' multiplies each course grade by its 'credits' (or credit hours) before averaging. Universities typically use Weighted GPA because courses with more credits have a stronger impact on the final result.
- Q.Why does the Target Grade mode say 'Impossible'?
- Based on your current grade and its weight (how much of the final grade it accounts for), even if you score a perfect 100% on the final exam, it is mathematically impossible to reach your target final grade.
- Q.Can I include + and - grades (like A+, B-) in the US 4.0 scale?
- Yes, you can. We provide a standard 4.0 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) by default, but you can open 'Grade Scale Settings' to customize and add any letter and numeric value combinations (e.g., A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3) to match your school's exact system.
- Q.I heard the German grading scale is better when the number is lower. Can it calculate that?
- Yes, it can. Please select the 'Germany (1-6)' scale. In the German education system, 1.0 is the highest grade (Sehr gut) and 6.0 is the lowest (Ungenügend). This tool fully supports calculations using this reversed scale.
- Q.Can I save or print my calculation results?
- To protect your privacy and security, this tool does not have features to save input data or results (no session storage or cloud saving). If you want to keep your results, please take a screenshot or copy the results into a text editor.
