Glossary
- Pomodoro Technique
- A time management method that alternates 25-minute focused work sessions with 5-minute short breaks (one "Pomodoro"). Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, it helps maintain sustained productivity over long periods.
- Ambient Sound
- Background sounds such as rain, cafe noise, or crackling fire. Research suggests that moderate ambient noise can enhance concentration by providing a consistent auditory stimulus that prevents the brain from being distracted by sudden sounds.
- Web Audio API
- A powerful audio processing API built into modern browsers. This tool uses it to synthesize and play ambient sounds in real time without saving any MP3 files, keeping everything local and private.
- White Noise
- A type of noise containing all audible frequencies at equal intensity. Its "masking effect" covers sudden distracting sounds, making it widely used as a background for studying, sleeping, or focused work.
- Master Volume
- A single control that adjusts the overall output level of all ambient sound channels simultaneously. Lets you change the overall loudness while preserving the individual volume balance you've set for each sound.
- Cycle Count
- The number of consecutive Pomodoro rounds to complete. A standard session is typically 4 cycles (about 2 hours), after which a longer 15–30 minute break is recommended before starting the next session.
- Deep Work
- A state of distraction-free concentration on cognitively demanding tasks. Blocking out notifications and environmental noise — aided by the Pomodoro technique and ambient sound — makes it significantly easier to enter and maintain this high-focus state.
FAQ
- Q.Are the audio files saved from a server?
- No. All sounds are generated in real time inside your browser using the Web Audio API. No MP3 files are ever saved.
- Q.Does the timer stop if I close the tab?
- Yes, closing the tab will stop the timer. To keep it running while you work elsewhere, simply leave the tab open in the background — you don't need to mute it.
- Q.Can I customize the work and break durations?
- Yes. While the standard Pomodoro is 25 min + 5 min, you can freely adjust work time (15–60 min) and break time (3–15 min) using the dropdowns to match your personal focus rhythm.
- Q.Is registration or installation required?
- No. Just open the page in your browser and start using it immediately. No data is saved to any server.
- Q.Can I play multiple ambient sounds at the same time?
- Yes. All 8 ambient sounds (rain, cafe, fire, waves, wind, birds, thunder, train) can be mixed simultaneously at any volume level — create your own perfect soundscape.
- Q.Does it work on smartphones?
- Yes. It works on iOS and Android browsers. On iOS, audio may be paused when the screen turns off due to system restrictions, so it's best to keep the screen on while using it.
- Q.Are my volume settings and presets saved?
- The current version does not persist settings across page reloads — refreshing the page will reset everything. Your favorite sound mixes can be quickly recalled using the preset buttons.
