Aspect Ratio & Resolution Glossary
- Aspect Ratio
- The proportional relationship between the width and height of an image or screen. It is generally expressed in a 'width:height' format (e.g., 16:9).
- Resolution
- A value representing the detail of an image or screen, usually expressed as 'horizontal pixels × vertical pixels' (e.g., 1920×1080). Even with the same aspect ratio, different resolutions result in different image quality.
- Letterboxing / Pillarboxing
- The black bars that appear when displaying video with a mismatched aspect ratio. Black bars on the top and bottom are called letterboxing, while bars on the left and right are called pillarboxing.
- 16:9
- Currently the most common widescreen ratio. Used for YouTube videos, digital broadcasting, Full HD (1920×1080), and 4K video.
- 9:16
- The vertical screen ratio for smartphones. It is the standard format for vertical short videos like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
- 4:3
- The standard ratio for traditional CRT TVs and PC monitors. Still used today for presentation slides (PowerPoint) and devices like the iPad.
- Resize / Crop
- Changing the pixel count of an image is called resizing, while removing unwanted outer areas to change the aspect ratio is called cropping.
- Safe Zone
- The safe display area in vertical videos like Stories and Reels that is not obscured by UI elements (icons or buttons) at the edges of the screen.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q.Does aspect ratio affect SEO?
- Yes. Platforms have recommended aspect ratios (e.g., 1.91:1 for OGP images). Proper settings affect CTR and display quality.
- Q.Can I calculate video aspect ratios?
- Yes. The exact same pixel ratio calculation method applies to both videos and images.
- Q.What is the relationship between DPI and pixels?
- DPI indicates print resolution (dots per inch), while pixels represent digital screen size. This tool calculates pixels for digital screens.
- Q.What is the recommended aspect ratio for YouTube?
- 16:9 is recommended for standard horizontal videos, and 9:16 for vertical videos like YouTube Shorts.
- Q.Why are my images cropped on Instagram?
- Instagram feeds recommend 4:5 or 1:1. Horizontal images like 16:9 are automatically cropped.
- Q.Is the golden ratio the same as aspect ratio?
- The golden ratio (approx. 1.618:1) is a mathematical proportion considered aesthetically pleasing, which is a specific type of aspect ratio.
- Q.Is my data sent to a server?
- No. All calculations are performed entirely in your browser (locally), so no data is sent externally.
- Q.Can I use this on a smartphone or tablet?
- Yes. The tool features a fully responsive design for a comfortable experience on mobile devices.
