This is an online tool for setting and removing passwords on PDF files. Both viewing password (user password) and editing password (owner password) are supported.
Permissions for printing, copying, editing, etc. can be set individually, and the encryption level (128bit / 256bit AES) can also be selected.
All file processing is completed within the browser and the PDF file is never loaded to the server.

Set password and permissions
Enter your password and set permission/prohibition for printing, copying, and editing. (If in password release mode, enter the set password)

Glossary
- PDF Password Protection
- A security feature that encrypts a PDF file, requiring the correct password to open, edit, or print it.
- Owner Password (Permissions Password)
- A password that controls operations like printing, copying, and editing. The document can be opened but specific actions are restricted.
- User Password (Document Open Password)
- A password required to open the PDF. Without it, the file contents cannot be viewed at all.
- AES-256 Encryption
- A 256-bit symmetric key encryption standard by NIST. The strongest PDF encryption available, providing government-level security.
- RC4 Encryption
- A legacy encryption method used in PDF 1.4 and earlier. Available in 40-bit and 128-bit key lengths, but AES-256 is recommended due to known vulnerabilities.
- PDF Permission Flags
- Individual flags defined in the PDF specification that allow or deny specific operations: printing, copying, editing, annotation, etc.
FAQ
- Q.Can I remove a password if I've forgotten it?
- This tool supports removing "Owner Passwords" only. Removing a forgotten "User Password" (document open password) is not supported for security reasons.
- Q.Are files sent to a server?
- No. All encryption and decryption processing happens entirely within your browser's JavaScript. Files are never sent to any external server.
- Q.What's the maximum PDF file size?
- It depends on browser memory, but typically up to 50MB. Very large files may take longer to process.
- Q.What's the difference between AES-256 and RC4?
- AES-256 is the current strongest standard. RC4 is legacy. Use AES-256 unless you need compatibility with very old PDF readers.
- Q.Can I restrict only printing or copying?
- Yes. When setting an Owner Password, you can individually allow or deny printing, text copying, editing, and annotation.
- Q.Is it safe to email a password-protected PDF?
- AES-256 encrypted content is highly secure, but never send the password in the same email. Use a separate channel (SMS, phone call) for the password.
