About Guitar Chord Randomizer

The Guitar Chord Randomizer is a free tool that instantly generates musically natural and creative chord progressions based on your selected "Key" and "Genre". Using algorithms that incorporate the characteristics of various genres like Pop, Rock, and Jazz, it creates practical progressions rather than just random strings of letters.

Its biggest feature is the playback function powered by the browser's standard "Web Audio API". You can instantly play the generated chord progression to check how it sounds. This allows you to brainstorm ideas and create melodies even when you are on the go without a guitar or piano at hand.

Everything runs entirely within your smartphone or PC browser. No special app installations or account registrations are required, ensuring a safe and secure experience.

how to,

How to Use the Generator

STEP 1

Set Key and Genre

From the control panel, select the "Key" (e.g., C, G, Am) and "Genre" (Pop, Rock, Jazz, etc.) for the song you want to generate. Choose the length ("4 Bars" or "8 Bars") and adjust your preferred tempo (BPM) using the slider.

STEP 2

Generate Progression

Click the "Generate Random Progression" button. Based on your settings, our unique algorithm will instantly generate a chord progression and display it. If you don't like it, you can press the button as many times as you want to create a new one.

STEP 3

Play, Listen, and Copy

Press the "Play" button to hear a guitar-like synthesizer sound directly from your browser to check the progression by ear. The currently playing chord will be highlighted. Once you find a progression you like, click "Copy Text" to paste it into your notes or composition software.

Chord Progression Glossary

Chord Progression
A sequence of musical chords played in a specific order over time. It forms the harmonic foundation of a song, dictating its mood and development. The quality of a chord progression directly impacts the overall feel of the music.
Key
The tonal center or base scale of a piece of music, such as "C Major" or "A Minor." In this tool, specifying a key ensures that the generated chords fit naturally within that musical scale.
Diatonic Chords
Chords constructed using only the notes found within a specific key's scale. Using diatonic chords as a foundation creates a naturally sounding and cohesive musical progression.
BPM (Beats Per Minute)
A unit used to measure the tempo (speed) of music. It indicates the number of beats that occur in one minute. For example, a BPM of 120 means there are 120 beats per minute (or 2 beats per second).
Web Audio API
A standard JavaScript feature that allows for advanced audio synthesis and processing directly within a web browser. This tool uses it to synthesize and play chord sounds locally, without needing to communicate with a server.
Secondary Dominant
A dominant chord temporarily used to resolve to a diatonic chord other than the tonic. It is frequently generated when you select the "Jazz / R&B" genre, creating a strong harmonic pull and a more sophisticated sound.
Randomizer
A program that generates different, unpredictable results based on certain rules and conditions. It's a valuable tool to break out of a creative rut and discover unexpected new musical ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Can I use the generated chord progressions without copyright restrictions?
Yes, you can use them completely royalty-free. Chord progressions themselves are generally not subject to copyright. You can add your own melody and freely publish or sell your songs, both commercially and non-commercially.
Q.I can't hear any sound. What should I do?
On smartphones, if silent mode is on, browser audio may not play. Please disable silent mode and turn up your media volume. Additionally, modern browsers require a user interaction (like clicking a button) before audio can be played, so ensure you have interacted with the page.
Q.Do I need to install an app?
No installation is required. As long as you have a modern browser on your smartphone or PC, you can use all features immediately.
Q.Can I use this for composing on instruments other than guitar?
Yes. The concept of chord progressions applies to any instrument. You can use it for composing or practicing on piano, ukulele, or any digital audio workstation (DAW).
Q.Does it work offline?
Once the tool is fully loaded in your browser, all processing (generation and playback) happens locally. It will continue to work even if you temporarily lose internet connection.
Q.Does it generate complex jazz chords?
When you select 'Jazz / R&B' as the genre, the tool generates 4-note chords like major 7ths (M7) and minor 7ths (m7), and may occasionally include secondary dominants to create richer, more complex voicings.
