About PDF Redaction Tool
The PDF Redaction Tool is a completely free utility that allows you to securely hide personal and confidential information within PDF files directly in your browser. You can intuitively blackout My Number, bank account details, and company confidential data with simple mouse operations.
The greatest feature of this tool is its completely client-side processing with no data sent to any server, and its text-unextractable complete flattening (re-rasterization). Rather than just placing black shapes on top, it converts the entire page into an image before output, ensuring you don't have to worry about copied text or leaked hidden metadata.
Steps for Secure PDF Redaction
Load PDF file
Drag and drop the PDF file you want to process into the dotted area, or click to select it. The file is not sent to the server and is loaded entirely on your device.
Redact the parts you want to hide
On the preview screen, drag your mouse to draw a black rectangle over the text or images you want to hide. If you make a mistake, you can undo it using the "Undo" button.
Save the redacted PDF
Click the "Download" button to generate and securely save a new PDF file with the redacted parts completely burned in (flattened) as an image.
Redaction Glossary
- Redaction
- The process of blacking out and completely hiding or deleting personal and confidential information in a document that should not be public. It is necessary not just to make it invisible, but to destroy the underlying data to make searching and copying impossible.
- Flattening (Re-rasterization)
- The process of converting vector data, such as text and shapes in a PDF, into a single pixel image (bitmap). This completely destroys the underlying text data and metadata, ensuring security.
- Text Layer
- Transparent text information data held in a PDF to allow text to be copied or searched. If redaction is incomplete, this layer remains, allowing redaction to be undone later, which causes information leaks.
- Metadata (Properties)
- Hidden information attached to the file itself, such as the creator's name, software used, and creation date. By regenerating the PDF based on images with this tool, the original unnecessary metadata is also cleared completely.
- Client-side Processing
- A method where the program is executed entirely within the user's browser (smartphone or PC). Because confidential files are not uploaded to an external server, there is absolutely zero risk of leakage to third parties via hacking, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q.Is the content of the PDF file sent or saved on a server?
- No, it is never sent anywhere. This tool uses a completely client-side processing approach. The file is only loaded and processed within your device (browser). Therefore, there is no risk of information leaking outside.
- Q.Is it possible to copy and restore the original text from the redacted areas in the output PDF?
- It is impossible. This tool doesn't just place black shapes over the text; it completely rebuilds the entire PDF page as a single flattened image. Therefore, the original text data is completely destroyed.
- Q.I can no longer search for text. Why?
- As mentioned above, to prioritize security, the PDF is converted into a safe 'image'. This means all text information, including unredacted parts, is rasterized, making text search impossible.
- Q.Why is the file size larger than the original PDF?
- Because each page is rasterized (turned into an image) for secure redaction, the file size tends to increase by the image capacity compared to a text-only PDF. It is configured to balance practicality and resolution.
- Q.Can I use this redaction tool on a smartphone or tablet?
- Yes, you can use it not only on a PC but also from a browser on a smartphone or tablet. You can apply redaction by dragging the area with your finger on the screen, just like on a PC.
Use Cases
Submitting Official Documents
It is very useful when submitting image PDFs of a driver's license or My Number card, allowing you to securely mask specific unnecessary personal information (like My Number) before submission.
Publishing Invoices and Contracts
When freelancers or corporations publish invoices and contracts online as proof of achievements, they can securely erase confidential information such as bank account numbers and client names.
Sharing Documents on Social Media
You can safely upload PDFs you want to share online (like school newsletters or neighborhood association documents) without the risk of names or contact information being extracted as text.
Providing Internal Meeting Materials Externally
You can quickly and securely handle situations where you need to provide PDF materials originally created for internal use to external partners, redacting only some confidential data or sales figures.
