IP Address & Network Terminology Glossary
- Public IP Address \n
- A globally unique address assigned to your device by your ISP when connecting to the internet. Every website you visit can see this address. It is the address displayed by this tool and is used for communication, geolocation estimation, and access control. \n
- Private IP Address \n
- An address used exclusively within a closed local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). Private IPs are assigned by your router and cannot be accessed directly from the internet. Multiple devices on the same network share one public IP but each has a unique private IP. \n
- IPv4 / IPv6 \n
- Two versions of the Internet Protocol for assigning addresses. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1) and supports about 4.3 billion unique addresses, which are now nearly exhausted. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g., 2001:0db8::1) and provides a virtually unlimited pool, designed as the long-term successor. \n
- ISP (Internet Service Provider) \n
- A company that provides internet connectivity to homes and businesses. ISPs allocate public IP addresses to their subscribers and are responsible for routing traffic. The ISP name shown by this tool indicates which provider owns the IP address block you are currently using. \n
- ASN (Autonomous System Number) \n
- A unique numerical identifier assigned to an autonomous system — a large network or group of networks operated under a single routing policy. ISPs, cloud providers, and large organizations each have their own ASN. It is used in BGP routing to exchange reachability information across the internet. \n
- User Agent \n
- A text string that your browser sends to every website you visit, identifying your browser name, version, operating system, and device type. Websites use this information to deliver optimized content. The User Agent shown by this tool is the exact string your browser is currently sending. \n
- VPN / Proxy \n
- Technologies that route your internet traffic through an intermediary server, masking your real IP address. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts all traffic between your device and the VPN server, providing privacy and security. A proxy server forwards requests on your behalf but may not encrypt the connection. When active, this tool will display the VPN or proxy server's IP instead of your own. \n
Frequently Asked Questions About IP Addresses
- Q.Will my IP address change?
- If you have a dynamic IP (typical for home networks), it may change periodically due to router restarts or ISP reassignments. Static IPs do not change.
- Q.Can someone find my physical address from my IP?
- An approximate region (city or prefecture level) can be estimated based on the ISP registry, but pinpointing a personal address or name is technically impossible without legal intervention.
- Q.What happens to my IP when using a VPN or proxy?
- When using a VPN or proxy, the VPN/proxy server's IP address will be visible to the internet. You can use this tool to verify that your VPN is working and your real IP address is not leaking.
- Q.What is the difference between static and dynamic IPs?
- A static IP never changes and is ideal for hosting servers or configuring access restrictions. A dynamic IP is assigned automatically by your ISP from a pool of available addresses and may change with each connection.
- Q.What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
- IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1) is the widely-used current standard but is running out of addresses. IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8::) is the next-generation standard that can assign virtually unlimited addresses. If your connection supports it, this tool can also display your IPv6 address.
- Q.Is this tool safe to use?
- Yes. This tool does not store any data on our servers. All information is retrieved via API directly in your browser without tracking or logging.
- Q.Could my IP address be the reason a website is inaccessible?
- If a website blocks access from certain countries or specific IP addresses (e.g., IPs previously flagged for spam), your current IP could be the cause. Renewing your IP (restarting your router) or using a VPN may resolve the issue.
Use Cases
Verify VPN Connection
\nAccess the page while your VPN is active to confirm that your real IP is hidden and the VPN server's IP is displayed.
\nServer Whitelisting
\nFind your current public IP to add it to a firewall or security group (e.g., AWS) for secure access.
\nNetwork Troubleshooting
\nWhen experiencing connection errors, check your assigned IP and ISP to provide accurate details to support teams.
\nAccess Log Analysis
\nLook up unfamiliar IP addresses from your website's access logs to determine their country and provider.
