About Fantasy Name Generator
The Fantasy Name Generator is a free naming tool that can instantly generate massive amounts of fictional character names and place names needed for RPGs, TTRPGs, novel writing, and game development with just a few simple settings.
By employing a unique syllable combination algorithm, it randomly constructs names with distinct "sounds" tailored to various races and world settings, including humans, elves, dwarves, demons, and dragons. Generated names can be copied to your clipboard with a single click, making it ideal for brainstorming and seeking inspiration for your creative endeavors.
Since the processing is done completely locally within your browser without communicating with a server, you can use the tool at high speed and with absolute privacy and security.
How to Generate Fantasy Names
Select Race and Gender
From the settings panel, choose the "Race" (e.g., Elf, Dwarf, Dragon) and the "Tone/Gender" (e.g., Masculine, Feminine, Neutral) that matches the image of the name you want to generate. Unique prefixes and suffixes specific to each race and tone will be applied.
Set Amount and Generate
Select the number of names you want to generate at once (10, 20, or 50) and click the "Generate Names" button. A list of original names based on your conditions will instantly appear in the results area below. You can generate as many times as you like until you find a name you love.
Copy and Save Your Favorites
When you spot a name in the generated results that sparks your inspiration, simply click on it, and it will be automatically copied to your clipboard. You can also use the "Copy All" or "Save as Text" features to export the entire list of candidates at once to paste into your notes or text editor.
Fantasy Name Glossary
- Fantasy Name
- A fictional name that is not bound by real-world languages or nationalities, possessing a sound that matches a fictional worldview, such as a world of swords and sorcery.
- Syllable
- A unit of pronunciation in linguistics. In this tool, to create the illusion of a fictional language, we prepare "prefix," "middle," and "suffix" syllable parts for each race and randomly combine them to generate names.
- Elf
- A race of forest fairies or long-lived beings frequently appearing in fantasy works. Their names often feature flowing, beautiful sounds associated with nature, such as "El," "Syl," and "Ria."
- Dwarf
- A stout, robust race often associated with mining and smithing. Their names usually favor heavy, hard-sounding syllables like "Grim," "Dor," and "Gar."
- TTRPG (Tabletop Role-Playing Game)
- A role-playing game played through human dialogue using paper, pens, and dice, rather than computers. Generators like this tool are often used to name characters in these games.
- Markov Chain
- A method using probability theory to model the transition from one state to the next. Advanced name generators sometimes use Markov chains trained on existing language data to create natural-sounding names, but our tool employs a more lightweight and faster syllable-combination method.
- Local Processing
- A method where the program is executed entirely within the user's browser (on a PC or smartphone). The advantage is that it operates rapidly and securely without requiring any data transmission to external servers.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q.Can I use the generated names for commercial works and games?
- Yes, the names automatically generated by this tool can be used freely for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, including novels, games, TTRPGs, and videos. No copyright attribution or usage reporting is required.
- Q.Will the same name be generated for other people?
- Because names are randomly generated through an enormous combination of syllables, the probability of an exact match is extremely low. However, for shorter names or specific race settings, coincidental overlaps are not entirely impossible. Please feel free to modify the generated names to suit your needs.
- Q.Is it possible to generate names in Japanese?
- Yes. By using the Japanese version of this tool, you can generate fantasy names with Japanese katakana syllables.
- Q.Are weird or hard-to-pronounce names sometimes generated?
- Due to the nature of random combinations, there may occasionally be strings that are difficult to pronounce or sound unnatural. In such cases, we recommend clicking the 'Generate' button again to create new candidates, or slightly tweaking a generated name yourself.
- Q.Are my inputs or generated names sent to a server?
- No, all name generation processes run locally within your browser. None of your settings or generated results are ever sent to or stored on an external server.
